What We Learn to Believe examines how stories, assumptions, and cultural narratives influence our understanding of reality. Through painting, installation, sound, and mixed media, Bill Porter explores how inherited ideas become embedded within that understanding.
The exhibition draws from narratives and imagery rooted in Porter’s childhood, bringing his Irish immigrant father’s stories of Christianity and life in rural Donegal into conversation with the cartoons, comics, and picture books of his American upbringing. These sources recur throughout the work as both subject matter and material.
As a Blind artist with low vision, Porter extends this inquiry to the cultural construction of blindness and disability, considering how cultural narratives shape lived experience.
What We Learn to Believe asks us to consider the stories we inherit, the assumptions they produce, and what we ultimately come to accept as true.

Deconstructing Disability: Perspectives + Identities centers the voices, experiences, and creative work of disabled members of the Lesley University community. Rather than presenting disability as a fixed or singular experience, the exhibition foregrounds the diverse perspectives and identities of disabled artists and makers.
While some works engage directly with disability and lived experience, others reflect the artists’ perspectives and identities through a broader range of subjects and approaches. Together, the works resist the expectation that disabled artists or their creative practices can be defined by disability alone.
Deconstructing Disability challenges narrow assumptions about disability while affirming the presence, creative agency, and contributions of disabled people within the Lesley community.
